Summer Term
The Sea
As the children have enjoyed our last topic of the beach, we are continuing the theme to learn about the sea.
This includes life and the environment under the sea as well as waves, sinking and floating and boats.
The role play area will be transformed into a fishing boat, as we talk about where the fish we eat comes from and how.
We are learning new songs about sea creatures and creating rock-pools with our outside water play.
We will be making 'the sea in a bottle' with water and sand along with fish and sea creatures to take home.
At home, please can you:
- Bring any music, books or images of the sea (or under it)
- Discuss any relevant topics to do with the sea at home, we would love to hear about it in our talk time.
- Collect any driftwood, pebbles, shells and seaweed from the beach for our rock-pool play.
The children are enjoying learning about The Beach. Living in and around Newquay we are lucky to have the beach at our doorstep, the children have enjoyed the role play in the sand and water outside and they are beginning to understand beach safety as we spoke about the flags to swim, staying with an adult, safety in the sun and all about lifeguards. The children are enjoying the art and craft activities, especially making their own surfboards.
At home could you:
- Perhaps visit the beach if the weather stays nice
- bring any beach pictures, books or games (buckets and spades) for our role play and show and tell time.
- Discuss with your children the safety of the beach (sea, sun and lifeguards)
Bugs
We are currently looking at Mini beasts and Bugs for our Topic. The children are enjoying the lovely weather by 'Bug hunting' outside using our new outdoor resources. We have now got butterfly and ladybird houses in our garden and the children are loving watching our garden come to life. The children are working really hard together to create a 'Bug' display.
At home, could you:
- Look for any information or fiction bigs to do with bugs,
- Bring any minibeast toys for our bug hunt
- Investigate any bugs in your garden and let the children tell you and us what they have found.
We are looking at plants for this half term. We are working hard in our garden to grow vegetables such as Radishes, carrots and turnips, as well as watching our fruit grow on our apple and pear trees. We have created picture with vegetable and fruit prints, and made carrots into paintbrushes. The children are really enjoying the greengrocers role paly area, using real fruit and vegetables.
At home, could you:
- Allow your children to investigate and discuss any observations in the garden to do with plants.
- Encourage your children to try and explore different fruit and vegetables
- Bring in any activities, books or plants that may be interesting to the children. (Cactus, Venus fly trap perhaps)
Spring Term
Music and Movement
We are looking at music and how it makes us move. This includes multicultural dancing from india and Africa. The children are enjoying exploring their bodies and how to make them move in different ways. We have been using the musical instruments and the children are beginning to understand rhythm and how they make the sounds.
At home could you:
- Bring in musical instruments from home
- Bring any CD's of music your children like to dance/ move to.
- Watch Boogie Beebies on CBeebies or BBC iplayer. The children love it!
Fairy Garden
We have transformed our outdoor area into a fairies paradise. The children have enjoyed dancing to mythical music and playing outdoors with the fairy role play and small world.
If any of you have any books, toys or music to match our topic, we would love to see it in our show and tell time.
SpaceOur new topic is out of this world, as we learn all about Space. The children are enjoying creating a space rocket for their role play and all about becoming an astronaut and about our planets.
We have created some lovely art work including a solar system and learnt how to walk like a space man on the moon.
At Home can you:
- Look for any images of space, planets or the sun.
- Some of you have telescopes, we would love to hear all about what the children can see with them
- We would like any books, music or games, activities for our Show and Tell.
We are starting our new year off with an exciting topic of Pirates. The children love our new role play Pirate ship and we are busy creating arts and crafts in Pirate style.
At home, Can you:
- Look for any Pirate storybooks, music or small world toys for our show and tell,
- Look for any fancy dress items for our Pirate role play
Christmas
We are learning about Christmas for the next two weeks.
We are rehearsing for our Carol concert and we are creating some lovely art work and gifts ready for the Christmas holidays. We are looking at Snow and ice as well as the story behind Christmas. The Children are really enjoying it and cannot wait to show you all what we have been doing in our Concert at the end of term.
At home, can you...
- look for any Christmas story books, CD's or DVD's for Golden time.
- You can visit the website www.northpole.com to watch the Santa webcam, create messages from Santa and play ICT skill games with the children.
We are investigating the Dark for our new topic. We have recently purchased a Dark Den and lots of UV, glow in the dark and light up toys and activities. The children have been exploring what different things look like in the light and dark, and are beginning to understand why this happens. We have also looked at Dawali as our Understanding the World area of learning. We have created Rangoli patterns and Lanterns as well as reading information books about the festival.
At home Could you:
- look for any flash, light up toys and investigate at home what lights up and what doesn't.
- discuss with your children why we need lights at night time.
Autumn and Harvest
Our new topic for this half term is Autumn. We are looking at the Autumn colours, the changes in the season and nature. This includes
- animals that hibernate,
- falling leaves,
- Berries and Seeds (Conkers and sycamore 'helicopters')
- Weather.
